Wat is Tamponziekte? TSS

What is tampon disease? Tampon disease, also called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

What is tampon disease? Tampon disease is also called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) named. This is an acute, serious illness caused by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This bacteria is present in everybody, but in general not harmful.

However, there are circumstances where the bacteria can cause an infection. For example:

  • A sultry environment
  • Wounds or damage to the skin and mucous membranes
  • Reduced resistance

Wearing a tampon for too long can create a sweltering environment. In that case, the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can start producing toxins. These are toxic substances that enter the bloodstream. This can lead to a shock state.

Symptoms of TSS include:

  • Very high fever
  • Flu symptoms (diarrhoea, muscle aches, chills)
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Redness all over the body and red eyes
  • Dizziness
  • extreme fatigue
  • Extreme drop in blood pressure (shock)

Ultimately, TSS can lead to organ failure with possible fatal outcome. About 5% of the victims die from the disease.

Always consult a doctor immediately if you suspect tampon disease.

Alternative menstrual product with less chance of TSS

Would you like be protected longer than with tampons and reduce the risk of TSS? Then the menstrual cup might be your answer.

Why is the risk of tampon disease lower with the menstrual cup than with tampons?

Here we quote the renowned WebMD;

“The way in which bacterial poisons enter the bloodstream may also be related to tampon use. Sliding a tampon into place in the vagina may make microscopic tears in the walls of the vagina, rupturing tiny blood vessels. A super-absorbent tampon — especially if it’s left in place too long, or if it is used when the menstrual flow is light — can dry out the vagina, making such tearing even more likely.

Experts say menstrual cup safer than a tampon, because it has a lower risk of toxic shock syndrome, a bacterial infection. And compared with a pad, there’s no chance of chafing or rash.

Menstrual cups are made of 100% medical silicone. They collect your menstrual blood instead of absorbing it. They also do not absorb vaginal fluid, unlike tampons. Therefore, no risk of dryness, irritation and wounds in the vaginal mucosa.

In addition, the menstrual cup remains in place by means of a light vacuum. This ensures that no oxygen gets to your menstrual blood. This gives you no problems with sweltering and bacterial growth.

You can use a menstrual cup up to a maximum of 12 hours, also during sports, swimming, showering, sleeping or urinating. Read more information about the menstrual cup here.
